How to handle requests to join your team

Because all team members can publish content on a team's site (see role overview for more details), it's important to decide how people can join your team.

There are 4 options that team administators can choose:

  • open - requests to join the team are accepted immediately (not recommended).
  • moderated - requests to join the team must be approved (this is the default and is recommended).
  • invite only - invitations and memberships can only be created by an administrator.
  • closed - memberships are fully administered by an administrator.

In 'open' or 'moderated' teams, people browsing your team's site will see a 'join team' link in the menu. Team members can also send invites to other people using the 'invite members' link in the team's menu.

For 'moderated' teams the team adminstrator(s) will be sent a request for approval by email when people try to join the team.

For 'invite only' teams, no link appears on the site and only the team administrators can send invites.

In 'closed' teams the team administrator can only add members by entering their username on the 'manage members' page.
